The Filmmaker

"Democracy 4 Dummies" was shot, written, edited, directed and produced by Montreal based filmmaker, artist and journalist Sophia Male.

Sophia studied Communications while attending the Liberal Arts College at Concordia University. After University she worked at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation studying Bureaucracy in the VP of English Television's office, filmmaking as Writer/Director Ken Finkleman's assistant on Escape from the Newsroom, and journalism as an investigative researcher and studio director of "The World at Six" in the National Radio Newsroom.

In 2004, her first short film "Water is Falling" aired on CBC Television's Zed in 2004, and she began freelancing for CBC radio. She shot "Democracy 4 Dummies" during the 2004 federal election, got a grant in 2005 to edit it, and finished producing the film in 2007. Currently she's developing at tv series, a reality show, and working as the videographer and editor for Time Supper Club, and its international event company "Music Loves Fashion."

During the mostly solo production process of making "Democracy 4 Dummies", Sophia was fortunate to have help from associate producer and researcher Duncan McDowall, sound composer Digini Dorfman, sound editor Matt Kober, and editors Winston MacPherson and Marc Cousinette. Great thanks also go to Charles Gervais, who was a dedicated consultant throughout the filmmaking process, as well as to Larry Gitnick for his continous support.
